Books By State

Below you’ll find an alphabetical list of states with links to the state overview and to each of the books I’ve chosen for that state (as well as a placeholder if I haven’t gotten to that state yet). I have decided to skip around a bit, but it’s easier for you to find what you’re looking for in alphabetical order. The map above shows which states I’ve completed, with the state I am currently reading marked “We Are Here.”

A note about the books marked Young Adult or Young Reader – I have differentiated between Young Adult and Young Reader where I felt the distinction was important. Some Young Adult books are written at a higher level and/or include more adult themes, including sexuality or violence that may make them less appropriate for younger readers. So if a book is marked Young Reader, it was one I felt comfortable with my own 10 year old son reading on his own. Those marked only as Young Adult are books that were designated for the Young Adult market AND ones that I would not feel were appropriate for my 10 year old to read on his own.

Ohio:

  • Ohio by Stephen Markley (2018) – One of the best for this challenge, but a very challenging book in general, plus lots of trigger warnings.
  • Harvey Pekar’s Cleveland by Harvey Pekar – I found this easier to read than the oft-touted American Splendor. Brief review on main Ohio page.
  • The Rust Maidens by Gwendolyn Kiste (2018)
  • Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo (2009) – lots of gore and triggers here, but very good for this challenge.
  • Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng (2014)
  • Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng (2017)
  • Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld (2016)
  • I Am Number Four by Pittacus Four (2010) – Read; setting not very good for this challenge.
  • The Trees by Conrad Richter (1940)
  • The Green Bay Tree by Louis Bromfield (1924) – suggested by a reader
  • Sula by Toni Morrison (1973)
